Dive Sites

Diving Sites at Fantasy IslandFantasy Island offers the best way to explore the underwater wonders of Roatan. Over 50 different dive sites are only minutes from our resort and offer an amazing variety of marine life, walls, and crevices. Lobsters, squid, octopus, spider, crabs, tunicates, shrimp, and seahorses are only a few examples of the marine life that pose for our divers. With water temperatures between 78 and 82 degrees F and typical visibilities between 80 and 100 feet, diving at Fantasy Island is perfect for both beginners and advanced divers. Listed below are just some of the dive sites Fantasy Island explores.

Mary's Place

Mary's PlaceThis famous dive site is considered one of the best in the Caribbean and in the top ten in the world. Centuries ago, an earthquake separated the reef creating a long narrow horizontal crack starting in approximately 30 feet of water and dropping to 90 feet. Divers who venture into this amazing underwater alleyway find a vista lit by the warm Caribbean sun as it filters through the crystal water and creates a spectacular backdrop for the colorful sponges and black coral formations that line the crevice. At the end of the crevice, divers find themselves on a spectacular 300 foot wall encrusted with numerous species of hard coral. Trumpet fish, green moray eels, and yellow seahorses are just a few of the marine animals that call Mary’s Place home. This is a dive you won’t soon forget.

The Valley of the Kings

This dive also takes advantage of a magnificent crack to lead visitors into the interior of the reef. Slightly wider than the crack at Mary’s Place, divers view the crevice opening from a depth of 80 feet. Thick branches of black coral and sea fans guard the entrance and line both sides of the crevice as it gradually climbs to the top of the reef. Here you’ll find soft corals, sea fans, and the occasional eagle ray or juvenile drum fish awaiting your ascent.

The Wreck of the Prince Albert

Prince AlbertThis 110ft freighter was laid in its final resting place over 25 years ago. It lies just yards from shore which makes it one of the best shore dives on the Island. The bow of the ship lies in 50ft of water and the stern in about 90ft. Mother Nature has gracefully turned the Prince Albert into a beautifully living reef. Its structure is still fully intact although it has been completely gutted, allowing the diver to safely explore its interior. Groupers, French Angels, Rays, and Morey Eels call the Prince Albert home, and like most gracious hosts they gladly invite your visit. At night you’ll encounter other creatures not generally seen during the day like Lobsters, King Crabs, and Spider Crabs who seek refuge in the corals of this wreck.

The Plane

Leaving the stern of the Prince Albert you’ll encounter a 1940’s era DC3 airplane in its underwater home. Although not intact, it is another artificial reef covered with flora & fauna. Together with the adjoining wall the DC3 makes for another excellent shore dive.

Fantasy Island Diving

Calvin's Crack

Descending onto the reef, you’ll find yourself floating through a large fissure which leads you into a sandy bottom cove. Here the walls are encrusted with dozens of species of live hard coral. Exiting the cove, the reef wall seems to drop into infinity. A short swim finds you in a much smaller cove inhabited by an amazing abundance of Marine Life and untouched reefs, truly a magnificent experience. Unlike most dives, this dive site is more than twenty minutes from the Resort so instead of returning to the dive center, we depart with two tanks aboard for each diver. In between the dives you’ll get to visit a picturesque local village whose inhabitants live in palapas along the shore.
